The Russian Embassy is not amused, and has asked the Bulgarian Government to watch more closely over the 1954 Monument to the Soviet Army in Sofia.
The inscription on the base, by the way, reads "In Step with the Times"--so the message could be as easily construed as anti-American as it can be as anti-Russian.
More recently, the monument was painted again--this time with the Ukranian national colors.
This is an excellent case of an artwork having a life of its own, well beyond the intentions of its creators.
